ROX-TV heads over to the City of Kalamazoo to catch Skitzo in the studio. He’s cooking up some new material and we were there to check it out.
Welcome back to the ROX-TV website. As always, I’d like to thank the returning readers and welcome any first timers drifting in. We cover the underground and report back on all the latest happenings around the Murder Mitten and abroad. From Colorado, to Arizona, Ohio, Indiana, California and around the country…we are on the move constantly and tracking the underground. Tonight, we will be talking about the scene in Kalamazoo.
ROX-TV was invited to head over to the “YOUNG KINGS Studio” at 1725 S. Burdick Street in Kalamazoo to catch up with Skitzo. He was heading into the lab to record some new material and opened the door to ROX-TV. We accepted immediately and got moving across the Murder Mitten to see what was going down.
I hit the road and set the course west to my destination. The drive wasn’t exactly a short drive, but it was a hell of a lot shorter than the drive to Tucson. The weather was kind of shaky when I left, hovering around 34 degrees.
It had snowed the night before and the US-23 was just on the edge of becoming a nightmare. It was wet pavement that was itching to turn to ice. I crossed my fingers, took it up to 85mph and hoped for the best.
The drive clocked in at two hours and thirty minutes. I made a high-speed burn across the state and pulled into the city right on time. I met up with Skitzo at his crib and we chopped it up about his new projects and music. The man is constantly on the grind and while we were at the pad, he was taking calls, giving me a sneak peak at his latest videos, and handling his business. I soon realized that the guy was a multi tasking machine. But hey, that’s how shit gets done. No rest required, just action and movement. Skitzo is constantly on the move and the hard work is paying off.
Rolling around the city
Skitzo took me on a tour of his city and filled me in on the happenings and places of interest. I always like getting a feel for a city when I hit the bricks and I had one of Kalamazoo’s sons giving me the run down. We hit down town for a spell before hitting the hottest street in the city, none other than Hays Park Avenue. Skitzo told me that in the summer it was one of the jump off spots for action and could get pretty wild at times. We dipped through the neighborhood and Skitzo showed me around. The wind started to pick up and it felt good to get out of the cold, once we rolled up to the studio. YOUNG KINGS Studio was on the corner or Reed and S. Burdick Street.
YOUNG KINGS Studio
We rolled into the studio and met the main man in charge. The studio was owned and operated by Yancey Sr. and his son Yancey Jr. We showed up just as a game of dominoes was coming to an end. I got a tour of the studio and introductions were exchanged.
Skitzo had his book of rhymes and started to rehearse his new material. Yancey Jr. was running the sound board and fired up a dope beat. The studio shook with bass as the instrumental played. Skitzo started rapping out loud to get ready for a take. I floated around and took pictures of the action and kept an eye out for the details. After a few quick runs through the track, Skitzo said he was ready to get into the booth.
And like that, it was on. The music fired up and Skitzo started firing off rhymes like a street sweeper. After the first take, they played it back to see what there was to see. It was good, but Skitzo wanted to run through the song one more time. He hit the booth again and he hit the mark on the second try. He was happy with the results and that was a rap.
When the new song is ready to drop, Skitzo said he’d give ROX-TV an exclusive interview about the drop and let us check out the polished product. We hung around for a bit and some wood was rolled up. The studio had a real nice haze going a few minutes later and smiles were had all around. Keep checking back with ROX-TV for the latest updates.
