Introducing ? & the Mysterians: A Journey Through Time by Rudy Hill

My name is Rudy Hill,

Rudy Hill

and I am a proud Chicano man with a passion for Music & Community. With this series, I’m going to share the musical loves of my life with you, starting with the legendary ? & the Mysterians. As we embark on this new article series for Rox-TV.com, exploring the rich history and impact of Chicano rock legends ? & the Mysterians, it’s a fitting moment to reflect on my own journey through the world of entertainment, wrestling, radio, and writing. With over 30 years of experience, I’ve had the privilege of managing artists like Esham and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, wrestling for TNA and JCW, and contributing to radio at The Legendary RJ Watkins Studios, WHPR, in Detroit, as well as writing for various local papers within the Chicano community and penning my own book. Join me as we dive into the fascinating story of ? & the Mysterians, a band whose music transcends time and continues to resonate with audiences around the globe.

Formation and Early Days

The story of ? & the Mysterians begins in the early 1960s, a time of musical ferment and experimentation. As children of migrant farmers who settled in Michigan, the original trio of Larry Borjas, Robert Martinez, and Bobby Balderrama were drawn together by a shared love of music. Inspired by surf rock bands and instrumentalists like Link Wray and Duane Eddy, they formed a group in 1962, dreaming of making their mark on the music world.

The Emergence of “96 Tears”

The addition of Rudy Martinez, or Question Mark, to the band was a stroke of fate. Known for his dancing skills and eccentric personality, Question Mark quickly became the driving force behind the group. Together, they began to craft a sound that blended gritty rock and roll with pop sensibilities, drawing inspiration from the likes of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. The band’s name, inspired by the sci-fi film “The Mysterians,” hinted at the mysterious aura they sought to cultivate.

In 1966, after auditions and label disputes, ? & the Mysterians released “96 Tears,” a song that would change their lives forever. The hypnotic organ riff, coupled with Question Mark’s soulful vocals, struck a chord with listeners and catapulted the band to stardom. Despite setbacks and challenges, “96 Tears” climbed the charts, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1966.

Chart Success and Beyond

Following the success of “96 Tears,” ? & the Mysterians continued to release singles and albums, though none would match the success of their debut. The band underwent lineup changes and musical shifts, but their passion for music never wavered. They experimented with new sounds and collaborated with other musicians, always striving to push the boundaries of their music.

The Later Years

In the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, ? & the Mysterians continued to perform and record, their music evolving with the times. Despite the changes, the band’s spirit remained intact, a testament to their enduring love for music.

Legacy and Influence

? & the Mysterians’ impact on rock music is undeniable. Their raw, unfiltered approach to music paved the way for future generations of musicians, including myself. As a musician and fan, I have always been inspired by their music and their story. “96 Tears” remains a timeless classic, and the band’s influence can be heard in the music of countless artists.

A Personal Encounter

In 2010, I had the pleasure of meeting one of the great Mexican-American rock icons, ? & the Mysterians, at Winterfest. I was asked if I would be interested in introducing the band in downtown Detroit, and it was my pleasure to do so. My dear friend Frank Garza rushed me backstage to get me on stage in time to introduce, “the greatest Chicano rock band in the world, ladies and gentlemen, give it up for the great ? & the Mysterians!” Watching this man live into his late 60s or early 70s go up on that stage and captivate the audience the way he did was like nothing I’d ever seen before. I’ve witnessed some of the greatest showmen in music, but ? is undeniable with his ability to captivate an audience the way he does.

Personal Thoughts and Reflections

? & the Mysterians are a group that most definitely deserve recognition, recognition of being one of the very first ever Mexican-American rock and roll groups to make it to the top. In a racially intense time of the 1960s where black and brown wasn’t accepted the way it is now, this is why the old Legend is that? Named himself that so that people would buy his records without prejudice.
