Among these local legends is Mondo Kane, a Chicano Soul rock band whose members have been rocking together for over 40 years. 

Let’s take a closer look at the members of Mondo Kane and delve into their individual experiences and contributions to the band’s rich history. Joe Gillis, a professional keyboardist for over 35 years, joined Mondo Kane in 1982. Apart from his keyboard skills, Joe also serves as a sound engineer, system analyst, lighting technician, and contributes background and lead vocals. Joe has collaborated and performed with various bands, including Catalyst, Laredo’s, and Classics, and has toured with artists like Wanda Jackson, Jack White, and Stone Steel.

Neil Lewis, the band’s drummer, is truly a shining star. With over 30 years of performing music, Neil’s love for Motown, jazz, and Neil Diamond music from his childhood has influenced his drumming style. Neil began his musical journey at the age of 12, learning guitar, bass guitar, piano, and drums. Over the years, Neil has performed at major events such as Major Archer’s Inauguration Ball, various festivals, bars, and black-tie events throughout Michigan, showcasing his determination and passion for success. He has also played with bands like the Hillside Stranglers, Spaced Relations, and Juke Box, and was the house band for Old Shillelagh’s Detroit.

Eric Noffz, another talented member of Mondo Kane, honed his musical skills while studying music at Wayne State University. Eric is skilled at playing various instruments, including the saxophone, horn, and flute. He learned from some of the best, such as Norm Gladstone and Earl DeForest. Eric has been a mainstay in the Detroit club scene for years, performing with local groups like Dr. Pocket, Regular Boys, and Art of Fact, showcasing his soulful playing and perfectionist approach to music.

Joey Ramon’s musical talent spans over 45 years of experience, covering lead vocals, background vocals, bass guitar, musical arrangement, sound engineering, stage management, sound and light, equipment management, and event coordination. Joey has performed with numerous bands, including Mercury, Night Riders, Europa, Miguel Chacon and his Orchestra, Ray Martinez Orchestra, Latin Count, Laredo’s, Dave and the Domino, Northwind, Jeff and the Atlantic’s, Imaging band, Night Beat, Guy and Del Rocks, Shagg Nasty, Legend the Band, Stone Steel, and GNS.

Phil Romero, the lead guitarist for Mondo Kane, has over 35 years of musical experience. In addition to playing lead guitar, Phil contributes vocals, stage management, and equipment management, playing an instrumental role in the band’s success and musical progression. Phil has performed with bands like Night Rider, 17th Street Blues Band, GNS, Spy Vs Spy, Stigma, and Shag Nasty.

Reuben Romero, another talented member of Mondo Kane, has been involved in music for over 32 years, playing lead and rhythm guitar, vocals, and equipment management. Reuben is also a songwriter and the event coordinator of the annual Rubo Festival, a neighborhood gathering of various bands and musicians. He is the owner of Rubo Music Solutions, which instructs children in Detroit to play music. Reuben believes that involving more kids in music would help them play an instrument rather than fall into the violence plaguing our society.

Leonard Solano, a founding member of Mondo Kane, has over 45 years of experience as an entertainment specialist. In addition to his soulful harmonica sound and nonstop moves on stage, Leonard contributes lead and background vocals, serves as a producer, sound engineer, DJ, and handles audio and video projection for Mondo Kane

One of Mondo Kane’s most iconic performances is at the annual Rubo Fest in Southwest Detroit. This festival, known for its celebration of Chicano culture and music, has become a tradition for many in the community.
