Gary Basnett Of Blitz And Attak Passed Away

Gary Basnett Oi Icon Vocalist/ Guitarist Of Attak/Blitz Passes Away
Gary Basnett is still remembered as one of the staples in 80’s punk rock. And this is mostly because of his work with the band Attak. Oi music is still listened to today and remains one of my favorite sub genres of punk. As I was scrolling through Facebook this morning, I noticed the band Cheap Sex made a post that really struck me.

Punk seems to attract tragedy. Gary Basnett was struggling with MS for many years. According to a 2004 August interview he use to be an HGV (lorry) driver and retired due to health issues. And spends most of his time on his computer building websites. He Married to Lindsay (drummer for Attak) and has 4 children. And later joined Blitz for a brief period of time, recording Killing Dream.
Ian Glasper, author of Burning Britain: The History Of UK Punk 1980-1984 also made a post. And paying his respect to the UK icon.
This was sent to me from the band Cheap Sex after my mentioning of wanting to write this article. And for good reason. As I’m going through the internet I’m not finding much on Gary Basnett. I’m writing this article for him. Not to mention, the best that I can to give you a glimpse into his elusive history. With that said, I will be purchasing Ian Glasper’s books. And that’s all thanks to Cheap Sex for educating me.
If you want to read the full Skrutt Magazine interview with Gary, click here. But, I will share with you one of the most surprising discoveries I made in my research into this icon. Apparently, he enjoys Green Day and Sum 41. And that to takes me by surprise. Not only is he a fan of the music, he’s asked “What’s the most embarrassing record you own?” To which the man replies, “Why should I be embarrassed by anything own or do?”

Blitz is one of my favorite bands. And to be completely honest, this is first time hearing about the band Attak. As I write this to you all, this is what I’m listening to.
