Dropkick Murphys 10 Things You Didn’t Know

Dropkick Murphys 10 Things You Don’t Know (Probably)
Written By: Sid Jones
Dropkick Murphys are one of my favorite bands of all time. And their live album from 2002 remains one of my all time highly recommended. Since 1996, they have rocked millions of shows in thousands of venues. And as you can imagine, there’s a long line of history that goes along with that. From the various band members, to the stories they’ve shared. But, that’s why you’re here! To learn something new about one of the greatest bands of all time.

The Truth About Walk Away
I remember growing up and hearing my friend talking about the song Walk Away. And I’m certain most of you heard it as well. In fact, you probably have friends that believe this myth. And it goes like this: Original frontman Mike McColgan left. And in 2004, they released a song about him leaving to be with his family. But, that’s all it is. A myth. The song is actually about dads that leave their families. Now, you can listen to that song in a different state of mind. You’re welcome!

Al Barr Is Not From Boston, MA
This is another fact you may already know. However, it’s interesting that a Celtic band from Boston has a front man that is not from Bean Town. What’s more, he’s not Irish either. He’s Scottish and German. So, now you’re asking, “Where is he from then?” He’s from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The Live Free or Die, The Granite State and my home state. The more you know!

Shipping Up To Boston Was Not Their First Mainstream Hit
This one is a little more controversial. Everyone has a song they love from the Dropkick Murphys song. But, in this case we are talking about their first mainstream hit. Despite popular opinion, Shipping Up To Boston was not their first mainstream hit. That title goes to the song Tessie. Written after the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series, it celebrates the greatest moment in the history of sports. Bonus fact, it was released on the Warrior’s Code album. The same album that has Shipping Up To Boston.

Anarchy I Hardly Knew Ya
In the FX television hit show, Sons of Anarchy we know the celebrity appearances. Danny Trejo, Henry Rollins, Marilyn Manson and so on. But, did you know the Dropkick Murphys were also in the show? Not in the way you’re thinking. Although, how cool would it be to see Al Bar punching a Nazi in the face? That was a little nod to the Terminal 5 incident. Any way, their song Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya was played on the show. During a bar brawl in Ireland, you can hear the song. And it was used in the Season 3 trailer. See, bonuses! We have them!

Another Album In The Works
Ken Casey did a live Q and A on Facebook back in 2016. In this live, he’s answering any and all questions from Twitter and Facebook. Believe it or not, he’s answering my question and I’m shocked. “Yes, we did announce that we have another album coming out in (the following) November.” Now, this statement is interesting because he admits that it was a bad decision. And, we never got the album. However, this proves there is another Dropkick Murphys album in the works. Be on the look out for that.

Tulsa, OK Cancelled Show
This is going to be dark and brief. Just north of Austin, TX the Dropkick Murphys were involved in a fatal accident. Again, this is grim and they don’t like talking about it. A pedestrian jumped out into the highway. According to officials, this was a suicide. Everyone on the bus was shook up, especially the bus driver and the Tulsa show was cancelled. Moving on.

World Series Champions
Now, here’s a fun fact a lot of fans may not know. In 2004, the 100th World Series was won by the Boston Red Sox. And, it’s their first victory since 1918. For those playing the Home game, that’s 86 years. And they weren’t the only ones to receive their rings. The Dropkick Murphys were also awarded rings. Being credited as the band that helped them make it possible. As far as I know, they are the first band to be awarded World Series rings.

Mosh Don’t Fight
There is nothing wrong with a mosh pit. We have all been in one and they can get it intense. However, fights at Murphys show are not condoned by the band. In 2017, I was at their show in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Apparently, people were ready for a fight and Al Barr took notice. After the song was over, the frontman spoke on it and said, “If you want to fight, take that shit outside.” Ken Casey followed with, “This is a family show, there’s kids here man.” And that is an added bonus fact. The band intends for their shows to be for everyone. Which brings us to…

Ken Doesn’t Like Barricades
This may come as a surprise, but during their live Acoustic set on January 11, 2017 there was a live acoustic set on Facebook. How do I remember the exact date? Because that was my birthday. And at the time, I was getting back into social media. And when I heard about this, I had tune in. My highlights aren’t only that they performed both Rose Tattoo and Barroom Hero live. (There was a poll where we got to vote for which song we got to hear.) But, Ken said something very interesting. It appears, he doesn’t like barricades. “Please let the fans know that they can get as close to the stage as they want. I never liked barricades, I want to be as close to the fans as possible.”

Embrace The Legacy Award
It’s no surprise the Dropkick Murphys are constantly praised for the work they do. And, that’s not just Boston. It’s everywhere. What’s more, their charities are gaining mainstream attention. And in this case, it comes in the form of the “Embrace The Legacy Award.” More notably, their recognition for the Claddagh Fund.
“We’re not really big on awards.” Ken Casey explains. “But when something is in the namesake of Robert Kennedy, it’s an extreme honor. We’re very excited about it.”
And, that’s my list. Know of any other fun facts about this band? Let me know on Twitter @mtswordfish or down in the comments!
