The Briggs Criminally Underrated Punk Band

The Briggs Are Needed Now More Than Ever

Written By: Sid Jones

The Briggs continue to be one of my favorite bands of all time. In fact, they were my first real introduction into the punk scene. The album? Punx Unite: Leaders Of Today. Song For Us off their Numbers album. And I have seen them perform this song live on stage. It was March 10th, 2007 at my first ever Dropkick Murphys concert. Sick Of It All had left the tour, due to the lead singer having laryngitis. I received a message on Myspace from the Official Dropkick Murphys profile. And as much as I love Sick Of It All, I was ecstatic when I found out they were being replaced by The Briggs.

This band has joined several Warped Tours and they continue to be a staple in punk. But, I have to add that after all of their notoriety, they should way more popular. Also, we need another Briggs album soon. This needs to be a priority for the near future. The music scene is rapidly changing and these guys would fit right in. And I think with how versatile The Briggs are, they would thrive and add something to the waters in today’s current state of music.

Combining Sub Genres

One of the most interesting aspects of The Briggs is their sound and lyrics. As much as you could say that about a lot of artists or bands, this is something groundbreaking. Also, it adds to my confusion on how they’re not more celebrated. If you’re familiar with bands like Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, The Tossers etc. Imagine, combining their style with street punk. So, rather than using Celtic as a main dish, each album provides a little bit of everything. Each one contains an original sound and breaks away from traditional music.

For instance, Linkin Park joined with Jay Z on a project. But, it didn’t change anything. However, The Briggs managed to do this on their own. With a few features, including Ken Casey from Dropkick Murphys. But, take Come All Ye Mad Men and compare it to Back To Higher Ground. You’d have no idea it was the same band (if you’re not a fan, or familiar with their music.)

I can honestly say, it’s not pirate music and it’s not street. Instead, it’s their creativity and willingness to try something new. Again, that just further proves my point. Look at the music landscape and listen to what’s being released. Then, go listen to Bored Teenager then, Common and Unkown. Same band, and you wouldn’t know it. And I truly believe that each album gets better and better. However, Numbers will always be a top favorite of mine.

Ideas For The Briggs

Now, I love mixing music around and thinking of things I want to see live. And I think, as a fan I reserve that right. As do all of us. But, this is where I start to think that there’s something more to this. So, follow me on this train and you’ll see my vision.

If you did what I asked, you heard Common and Unknown. Now, imagine that song being performed with a female singer. Only, there’s a faster riff and more drums. I’m picuring someone like LeLe Xo, joining them for Bored Teenager. It’s not about romanticizing punk, or adding a female in for looks. Rather, it’s about adding to the constant evolution of The Briggs. Not to mention, there is a demand for more female artists. And I’m demanding the Briggs make a return. That’s what I call a win/win for all of us.

Another idea I have is having them join bands like Cheap Sex for a tour, or have them headline their own tour. Since they’ve re-released Numbers on vinyl it would be perfect. And I could see them thriving with other bands too. Throw them into an Alestorm tour and they’d fit right in.

Remember when I told you about the Dropkick Murphys bringing them out for that tour? Well, at that show that place was split. Half wearing Murphys merch and the other wearing The Briggs t-shirts. And this was a last minute change I’d like to add. And ever since then, I have been a huge fan and supporter of the band.

Bloody Minds

I’m not a fan of rant rock. However, Bloody Minds has that aspect to it and it’s one of my favorites. The only other band that really perfected and mastered the art of music and ranting was Against All Authority. For instance, Restoration of Chaos and Order. One of my all time favorite albums. And they had verses that had rants, just before the song ended. But, it was in melody of the songs. Which to me, is something I wish I could do. But, Bloody Minds from The Briggs is one of my all time favorites, because the entire is song is just that. Minus, the hook of course. But, again, it’s something they’ve perfected. Just listen for yourself.

It’s pure anarchy, throughout this band’s discography. Not just lyrically. But, creatively.
