Alestorm And Their Ten Greatest Songs Ever

Written By: Sid Jones

Alestorm continues to take the music industry by storm. And their shows are a reflection of the impact they make. And I’ll add that they’re in my top ten favorite bands. So, who better than Sid Jones to list their ten greatest songs? No one. See, I’m a fan of the show Black Sails. And I wish the show hadn’t been cancelled. But, Alestorm is that perfect embodiment of the classic HBO series. And Alestorm is one of those bands that unlike most, has a way of reaching to every single person.

Their catchy melody is perfect for drinking and is easy for everyone to sing to. I discovered them on the Dropkick Murphys Pandora station. And that same year, I went and saw them perform live at the Token Lounge. And I’m not going to lie, it’s one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. Hearing those guys, along with Nekrogoblikon and Aether Realm was a remarkable experience.

And that’s why I’m doing this list! So, without further ado. Let’s go back to the Golden Age of Piracy!

Fucked With An Anchor

Quite possibly one of their greatest songs. If you haven’t heard it, you’ll laugh. So, why is it at number ten? Well, In my honest opinion, it’s overplayed. However, Fucked With An Anchor did put Alestorm on the map. A lot of people became familiar with Alestorm, because of this song. This is their Shipping Up To Boston. And there’s nothing wrong with that at all. I will also add that this song has one of the best lines in all of music. “You’re all cunts, so fuck you all.” Brilliant!

Magnetic North

For me, this song is like listening to a painting. One of the more serious songs from Alestorm and it’s truly grueling. Not in a violent manner, but the way this song is performed makes you think of hardships. But, that’s one of the things I like about this song. You can’t mosh pit to it (I mean, I guess you could.) However, it’s a listening experience. Magnetic North for me is an inspirational song and it’s metal with harmony. Just, give it a listen and you’ll understand.

You Are A Pirate

I struggled with where to put this song. To sum it up, it’s a song everyone can sing and it’s perfect for drinking. And this was my first introduction to them, if I’m not mistaken. You Are A Pirate is fun, not to be taken serious and it’s still heavy metal. To be honest, I liked the length of this song. It’s short and to the point. Which, reminds me of the 80s music. Nothing over two minutes long. I will also add that this song is popular within the anime culture. For what reason, I’m not sure. Just a fun fact to add.

Drink

Quite possibly, one of the greatest music videos of all time. In fact, Drink is a great heavy metal/drinking song that I think everyone could enjoy. I mean, except the people with no musical taste whatsoever. Alestorm shines in this music video and song. Fun fact, this song and music video inspired a scene for my novel Eaten Alive. But, it’s at the number 7 spot for compromise. Popular and brilliant, but this could be considered their Du Hast. I, on the other hand, believe they have songs that surpass this one. In both greatness and storytelling.

Captain Morgan’s Revenge

A near seven minute song. And it deserves it’s own short film. Not only is it one of my favorite songs of all time, it has a long history to it and it’s perfect marketing. How Captain Morgan didn’t sponsor these guys is beyond me. Napalm Records could be putting out the best commercials with Alestorm for the delicious rum. Captain Morgan’s Revenge is actually based on a true tale as well. I bought a bottle of Captain Morgan Black on the other side of the label, is a story. Like, a message in a bottle so to speak. You can find it on Google, after you check out this Alestorm track. And trust me, it’s worth the seven minutes. A short story you can listen to!

Shipwrecked

I had to put this song in my novel, Dissent Is Not Treason. Shipwrecked is another great drinking song and it’s heavy metal. Again, pirate related with a great sound and the lyrics are hilarious. And the music video reflects this perfectly. Not only is it one of their most popular songs, it’s one that can turn your friends into Alestorm fans. It’s easy to sing along to and truly celebrated by their fans.

Chronicles Of Vengeance

In the beginning, I mentioned my love for the show Black Sails. And this song appears to be inspired by the show. Chronicles Of Vengeance is the tale of a pirate, seeking revenge after being betrayed. And the story continues with hardships and bloodshed. Again, another storytelling track from Alestorm that deserves praise and recognition. More so than others that have quickly soared in popularity.

Barrett’s Privateers

I’ve already mentioned this one in a previous article. And that was top ten metal songs of all time. But, it’s not at number two because this song is a retelling. And I have found that I overplayed this song. But, it’s a classic with a story. Barrett’s Privateers dates back to 1976. I don’t need to go further into it, if you check out the link above. Alestorm was number two on the list. You’re welcome.

2

Wolves Of The Sea

And this has become a favorite of mine. Wolves of the Sea is in my rotation of top 20 songs. Slightly cheesy, but entertaining and fun to drink and sing to. And I think a lot of pirate fanatics will enjoy this song. But, there is one song that tops this one. And currently sits at my top five greatest songs of all time.

1

Keelhauled

Here we are! The greatest Alestorm of all time, fight me. And if you don’t believe me, I didn’t even know there was a music video for this song. And my cameraman Jake, hates this song. Which, makes it more fun to enjoy. But, the reason I really like this song isn’t just the lyrics, the sound, or the video. Rather, it’s the accuracy the song depicts in regards to what Keelhauled actually means. Often referred to as keelhauling, “The sailor was tied to a line that is looped beneath the vessel, thrown overboard on one side of the ship. And dragged under the ship’s keel, either from one side of the ship to the other, or the length of the ship (from bow to stern.)

There is an entire Wikipedia page about the history of Keelhauling which I find to be fascinating. Thank you Alestorm for this brutal, fun drinking song and of course, the music video!
