ROX-TV takes five with Jason Covelli aka Mr. Evil…to talk art and ideas

Welcome back to ROX-TV, for this weeks five minute art review, we are speaking with artist Jason Covelli. He’s giving us a little insight on his art and also sharing a sliver of his work. We appreciate him taking the time to speak with us and his art form. The clock is running, so lets get right to it…..

Welcome to ROX-TV Jason, for the first-time viewers, can you introduce yourself proper?

My Names Jason Covelli nicknamed :”EVIL” Or “Mr. EVIL.'” hailing from Kenosha WisconSIN in between Milwaukee WisconSIN and Chicago Illinois.

As a self professed visual pen and ink artist, can you explain to the readers what that means in your own words?

It just means my own ways of seeing how it goes, I normally don’t think when I do my inkings  and also a fun fact… I’m partially colorblind so it’s an adventure for sure.

What motivates you as an artist Jason? What is the inspiration behind your work?

Honestly it’s mostly a spur of the moment, it’s like an “A -ha” Moment and then I let it go. I get the midnight inking spurts and I go at it .

At what age did you start to really get into the visual arts? Why?

I started when I was 4 thanks to my mom, she was a painter and pen and ink artist but she motivated me early on as well as my late Father, then one of my crazy aunt’s who I love showed me a few pieces and I never stopped

As you became more entrenched in art, at what point did you decide to go from a “dabbler” to allowing art to take a more serious role in your life?

There is no point in my life my Dabbles become more of a monster creation and it keeps goin, Art to me was always a serious role to me and I’m passing it to my kids.

How would describe the work you are currently doing to a total stranger, who might not be familiar with what you do?

Strange, fun, nightmares that make u look deep in the pieces I make

What are some of the other passions in your life, that might bleed into the canvas so to speak? (music, movies, books)

I love old-school Horror and Gore movies, documentaries on art and the culture, I love to read. I have over 1400 books on art, True Crime and old Hollywood and I love to collaborate with my son and daughter and wife

Can you tell the readers at ROX-TV what a “doomed truth spoken word artist” is exactly? (how to do you practice that self-expression, and if so, where?)

Well it’s my dark, unhinged, spoken word. I tackle subjects from my mental health to perversions to serial killers to disturbing taboos, I will not do religion or politics, no room for that for me honestly. Since April 1st 1994 I’ve been recording and preaching when I can.

What are you currently working on?

I’m Currently working on  3  Collaboration Zines  one based on clowns, another called:”HEADCases.” My parts about the sideshow, and another collaboration Zine called “There’s Candy in Hell” and some secret projects.

How has the Covid reality, affected your craft? (being shut in, more time to focus on your creative process?)

Oh God no it’s honestly made it more productive

What does the future hold for Jason Covelli? Any plans or news you’d like to tease out to the readers? Or perhaps a direction to recommend for people just becoming aware of art for the first time (it does happen)?

I have a few Ghoulish toy concepts in the works, a few unique doomed truth Spokenword releases coming up as well as a print series and two monster movie themed cook book zines. To the readers out there, never give up your passions, keep at it and to the non believers…. go to hell, it’s all the passion and do what you love.

Shout outs: I’m from the 90’s and I dig shout outs. Who are you shouting out today? (Anyone, anything)

Hell yes so do I!  To my wife Amy and Kids Krystal and Roman, you guys keep me goin and I love u guys for keeping me at it. To you Mike, huge killer thanks for the time you took took to interview me and to my fans new and old  Mr.EVIL FUCKING Loves you guys and gals!!!

Thanks again for stopping by ROX-TV for the five minute art review. We’d like to thank Jason Covelli for chopping it up with the readers and sharing some of his art with us. Please come back as often as possible to check out the unique and interesting content, all waiting for you here…on ROX-TV. Until next time…
