Rolling Stones Drummer Charlie Watts has died at the age of 80
It has been reported that Charlie Watts, the drummer for the legendary Rolling Stones has died today. Charlie was reported to have passed away today in London. The cause of his death is not known but it was said that he passed away “peacefully” according to spokesperson (according to Variety).
Charlie Watts was the drummer for the worldwide phenomenon known as the Rolling Stones. He reportedly withdrew from an upcoming US tour on August 4th, citing a need to recover from a successful “medical procedure”. Doctors had advised that Charlie Watts needed rest after the procedure.
Although he was diagnosed and successfully treated for throat cancer in 2004, the Rolling Stone was in general good health for his half century in the band. He battled some substance abuse issues in the 1970’s and 1980’s but was able to put that behind him.
Watts was one of the greatest drummers of his time, last performing at a concert in Miami in 2019. Watts joined the Rolling Stones in 1963. He was married in 1964 to his wife Shirley and stayed with her for the duration of his life, through it all. Charlie was introduced into the Music Hall of Fame in 1989 as a member of the Rolling Stones.
As a young boy I used to listen to my father’s records and the Rolling Stones were top heavy. I eventually moved onto my own musical tastes, but the Rolling Stones stayed with me through the 1990’s and even until this very day. When I’m having a good time, the Stones always find a way to the speakers.
For any of the Rolling Stones to pass away is like the sun failing or the moon falling out of the sky. It’s not supposed to happen. They were meant to go forever and basically have for decades. The night will feel just a little different tonight, knowing one of the old gods have left this place. Wherever this Rolling Stone is today, I hope its an easy ride to the next stop.
