Welcome back to the ROX-TV website. Tonight, we have another special episode in our ongoing coverage of the upcoming Chicano Fest 2023. That’s right, Southwest Detroit is buzzing with excitement as the event inches forever closer. Although we are still a short way out, September 9th is fast approaching. I can almost taste the food and hear the music. I’ve been to the last two, so I know what to expect. But if you haven’t been yet, this is the year to go and be counted among the numerous citizens of Detroit (both new and old…we are glad you made it) who support the event. I don’t really know where to begin when describing Chicano Fest. It takes on a number of different angles you know, and it’s really all great stuff. I could sit here and talk to you about the artists who come to the event, selling wonderful, one of a kind paintings….or perhaps jewelry. I’ve seen a lot of that in previous years. As a rule, I always try to bring a few extra bones, because finding something to take home with you is easy. Places like that are dangerous to me because I want it all. Over the years I have picked up a few righteous pieces and artwork, that now adorn my office. Every time I look at the paintings I’m transported back. But beyond that, it reminds me of the great times I had while attending the free event. Let me say that one more time…the event is free.

Free to attend, free bounce houses for the kids, free music to enjoy, usually a free taste treat or two floating around. It’s a nice family event, but also has room to get loose for the adults too. The ages range from babies to elders and I’ve never seen anything at these events except good will and brotherly/sisterly love. It’s a groovy thing and I’m proud to support such an endeavor on any level I can. Donations? Well, if you find yourself in a place where you are doing alright and have a few extra bucks to kick into the bucket…The COC and CTB would thank you for your kindness. Every little bit helps and if you can, give what you can. If not, show up and and still be treated like family. This event is bigger than money anyway because the reasons for it’s happening are of the greatest importance. Embracing one’s own culture and history, celebrating the time-honored traditions, Familia, it really transcends everything else. Knowing who you are, gives you an unshakeable foundation on which to build on. Knowing where you come from and the culture that fostered you’re existence is the greatest gift any of us can receive. These principles build strong families, strong communities, and pave the way for a better tomorrow.

I’m dirty Irish three hundred and sixty-four days a year…but on September 9th when CTB comes together with the COC…you know I’m waiving that Red, White, and Green. Irish and Chicanos once again marching towards victory. So be there when it matters. Come because it’s a great event. Stay and meet other humans. Laugh and break bread with Southwest Detroit! Come on man, it’s time to get down like we used to! Who’s grabbing the 40’s?
