Rudy Hill’s Reflections on Zapp

One of the greatest joys of fatherhood is introducing your children to the music of your youth. One memorable night was when my 6-year-old son, DJ Cisco Kid AKA Santana Hill, and I went to see WAR, SOS Band, and our featured artist of the week, ZAPP! Santana looked adorable in his Prince t-shirt and leather fedora hat. People couldn’t help but notice and admire the sight of this little kid enjoying the old-school show. It made me incredibly proud. Yes, my 6-year-old is a big fan of the old school. This wasn’t even his first concert; that honor goes to the coolest cat in the music business, MORRIS DAY & THE TIME. But I’ll save that magical night for another article. Back to ZAPP! They hit the stage after SOS Band and before WAR, and they absolutely killed it. Santana was dancing up a storm, having the time of his life with the adults. It was a real old-school experience.

Having been in the music scene and entertainment business in Detroit for over 30 years, I know quite a few people in the industry and at the venue. As we were waiting for WAR to come on, a young usher, who happened to be a juggalo, approached me and said, “Hey Rude Boy, would you like to take your son to meet ZAPP?” I replied, “Of course, little homie, lead the way.” So there we were, with our faithful Juggalo usher guiding us to the backstage area. People were still staring at this six-year-old, which was quite amusing. When we finally got backstage, we met the Troutman Brothers of the legendary ZAPP. They were so surprised and delighted to see such a young fan. They gave Santana a T-shirt, a signed photo, and, of course, took a photo with him. The Troutman Brothers were thrilled to see a young fan keeping the old school alive, and Santana was beaming from ear to ear.

Zapp: A Legacy That Lives On

As we wrap up our journey through the world of Zapp, it’s clear that their music and influence continue to resonate with audiences around the world. While the group may no longer be touring or releasing new music, their legacy lives on through their timeless songs and the countless artists they have inspired.

Today, Zapp’s music can be heard in movies, commercials, and sampled in songs by contemporary artists, proving that their innovative sound is as relevant today as it was decades ago.
