Rox-Tv: Welcome back, The BAR! What brought you back to the hip-hop scene after two decades?
THE BAR: never left! That’s really what comes to mind when I consider this question, but honestly, I have something to say, which isn’t new, but it was a certain something that came at a time it warranted saying. Also, I saw Andre 3000 looking sad AF. Come on bro, I got you.
Rox-Tv: Your influence in Detroit’s hip-hop scene is undeniable. How have you seen the city’s music culture evolve since your last time around?
THE BAR: Culturally speaking, not really. I mean that in a good way, unless you’re considering the mainstream attention that came and the reaction to that. Actually in that case, yes, I have seen a change but that change has to do with Detroit’s evolution outwardly and its influence on the global culture, really. It’s been amazing to see and long overdue.
Rox-Tv: Your bio mentions blending genres. Can you tell us about the musical styles you’ve been mixing and how they reflect your journey?
THE BAR: If it’s musical, it can be hip hop. To see what I mean here think about songs and musical performances meant to appeal to the world over the last 20 years. World Cup, Super Bowl halftime shows, WrestleMania, even politics. You’ll notice a theme even when it’s “non hip hop” acts performing the music. So what I do is nothing new (except when it comes to Arabic music; it was new when I did that). Just check it out and see it get taken to another level.
Rox-Tv: Your bio boasts “inception-level wordplay.” Can you share a recent lyric that you’re particularly proud of?
THE BAR: See me boy, better just dummy up. TheBAR got the RABeht, no palindrome.
You sunny side flipping new orders up, I’m flipping Gregorian calendars.
See? You can vibe AND learnnnnnn. Little preview of Grown Man Game, dropping this Summer.
Rox-Tv: You’re described as bringing artistry back to hip-hop. What do you think has been missing in today’s music, and how do you aim to fill that void?
THE BAR: Hip hop was and is unique in how pragmatic and immediate it was. In other genres when lyrics describe what is happening that day, or that moment (I am sitting at the counter…) it’s novel. That is the crux of hip hop. You wouldn’t hear Elvis say, “love hot like an inferno, in the studio with the colonel.” But, “Standing in the booth right now, hand me the mic and here the truth right now,” is an idea that is beyond fair game. Hip hop’s original and more established fan base might be missing this kind of pragmatism and accessibility. I don’t know, either way I’m here to brin git back or make it better.
Rox-Tv: Your bio mentions “sex appeal” – care to share how you’re incorporating visuals into your music?
THE BAR: Hey! I said I was working on that.
Rox-Tv: What can fans expect from your upcoming projects this summer, both in terms of sound and visuals?
THE BAR: You ask me excellent, excellent question, Sean Mooney. I’m trying to keep all your senses engaged. I want everybody who is generous enough to give me a view or a listen to be as entertained as I am capable of making them. Entertained, and aroused.
Rox-Tv: In a crowded hip-hop market, how do you plan to stand out and connect with your audience?
THE BAR: The pinnacle of lyricism. That’s first and foremost. I’m the best in the world at this shit. Maybe you’ll laugh a little while you’re vibing, who knows. Either way, thank you for checking it out.
Rox-Tv: Lastly, what’s the main message you hope listeners take away from your music?
THE BAR: I was just learning to drive when Thuggish Ruggish came out. And I know there are a lot of people in that general vicinity. I fuck with the new shit. I swear! I do! But come on, I need something new, so I decided to create it myself. Who’s coming with me?
Rox-Tv: . Your bio mentions Rox-Tv. How has your experience with them shaped your career, and what role do they play in your journey as an artist?
THE BAR: These guys bring everything you could want to the table. Very skillful, easy to work with, all around great guys. But here’s the thing, and the biggest compliment I can give, they are excellent facilitators to the creative process. Check out Rox-Tv and the collab with the BAR this Summer. You’re gonna fucking love it!
